Taking action to elimate wallaby...

Te Arawa Wallaby Kāhui was established in 2022 by Ngāti Tarāwhai, who recognised the urgent need for a more coordinated and effective response to the devastating impact of wallabies and other pests on our ngahere. In 2024, the Kāhui was formalised as a collective of 7 Te Arawa iwi and hapū working together to protect our environment from the growing threat of invasive species.

Kāitiaki for our Ngāhere

The Kāhui has led pest control operations across large areas of Māori and private land within both the Wallaby containment and Wallaby buffer zones.

Our approach is guided by kaupapa Māori values, with a strong commitment to restoring balance to the whenua and safeguarding our forests, taonga species, and freshwater ecosystems

Our own kaimahi

The team has grown significantly – not just in size, but in skill. Our kaimahi are now trained in all aspects of ground control and biosecurity, including trapping, night shooting, plant pest control, Wallaby Fence Maintenance, Tau koura monitoring, eDNA testing, health and safety practices, and data collection and reporting, and in the process to be trained as HFO Honorary Fisheries Officers.

Connecting our community

Beyond operational work, the Kāhui continues to build strong partnerships with community groups, landowners, and regional agencies to support a united and collaborative approach to pest control. This includes sharing knowledge, delivering training, and supporting large-scale initiatives such as biosecurity planning at high-risk sites like Lake Ōkataina.
